Baptism of Jesus – What Is Its Significance?
The Baptism of Jesus was carried out by John in the Jordan River – not for repentance because He was sinless (1 Jn 3:5; 1 Pet 2:22; 2 Cor 5:21), but to fulfill righteousness (Mt 3:13, 15), setting an example for sinners to humble themselves and repent, turning away from evil (Acts 3:26).
What Happened After The Baptism of Jesus?
As soon as Jesus was baptised, He went up out of the water. At that moment, heaven opened and the Spirit of God descended like a dove upon Him. A voice from heaven said, “This is my son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased” (Mt 3:16-17).

“I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on Him. I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God.” (Jn 1:32, 34) “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (Jn 1:29).

After the baptism of Jesus, He was tempted by the devil but He was steadfast and was not overcome by temptations and trials. He was was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert for a 40-day fast and was tempted by the devil (Mt 4:1-10). He was completely victorious. The bible says, “He was tempted in every way, just as we are and yet was without sin.” (Heb 4:15).
After the Baptism of Jesus, What Did He Preach?
He said, “The time has come. The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!” (Mk 1:14). He also said, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners, recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” (Lk 4:18-19)
After the baptism of Jesus, these were the gracious words from His mouth, His self-introduction that the people of the world may believe Him.
