Are you successful in seeking for the True God? The following is a sermon transcription that explain how seeing God in the graces of life meant.
Seeing God in the Graces of Life
(adapted from a sermon by Pr Wu Hao)
Are you successful in seeking for the True God? In most religions, paintings or statues are available for purchase so you can see the “gods” everyday. This is likewise to staying beside the temple.
Why do people still say that it is difficult to see God? This depends if the God whom they have seen is the true God.
Job 23:3 – “Oh, that I knew where I might find Him, that I might come to His seat!”
Job truly desired to see God. He was a legendary figure in the Bible. Although he was very wealthy, he had lost everything including his children in one day. This was the works of the devil. Job was truly God-fearing and he departed from evil. But he was unable to accept what has befallen on him. When his three friends came to advise and comfort him, he rebuked them wisely. Instead, he wanted to know where God was and insisted on seeing Him with his eyes. The religion that allows us to see God is the right one for us.
Job 23:4 – “I would present my case before Him, and fill my mouth with arguments.”
Often, we are unable to accept what had happened in our lives and we would try to deal with it using our limited means and wisdom. As man becomes wiser with age, his flesh becomes weaker as well. He is still unable to control his desires which bring forth worries and anxieties. This will make one unable to comprehend many things. Likewise for Job, who reckoned himself righteous and God-fearing was unable to accept his consequences.
If man is able to control his own destiny then this world will be a survivor of the fittest. However, there is only one True God in this world. When we are trying to resolve our problems or establish our religion, we hope to find a set of teaching which will allow us to accomplish both objectives. This is only possible if the religion has the truth and we can see God in it. The God whom True Jesus Church worships cannot be found in a portrait or statue but is everywhere.
Psalms 139:1-4 and 7 – “O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O Lord, You know it altogether. Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?
God is everywhere and He exists all the time. If God is contained in the temple or placed on the ancestral table, how shall we receive protection from Him when we are physically away from Him?
The God we worshiped is true and living and He knows our thoughts all the time. He protects us all the time. He is beside us and resides in our Church. In one of our monthly evangelistic service, a lady truthseeker told me that she saw a bright light behind us when we were speaking on the pulpit. Both of us had bright halos on top of our heads. This was the first time I have heard of people telling me about such a vision and was similar to what I read in comics. I replied, “Thank the Lord that you’re able to see that.” We preach the teachings and gospel of the True God. To be able to know God is good news.
Job 22:21 – “Now acquaint yourself with Him, and be at peace; Thereby good will come to you.”
Today, we must establish a true and right faith. We should tell ourselves that we have to see God with our own eyes. Only when we know this True God, then can we have peace which is the greatest blessing and grace from God. To be able to wake up and open our eyes every morning is considered precious because many have died during their sleep. This is also true when we are able to go to school or work. They might appear trivial but this is the blessing of peace from God.
When I was young, I had many encounters with snakes. There was once I was relieving myself at the grass patch in front of our house because it was dark and the toilets were far away. Suddenly I heard some hissings and I realised that I had just urinated on the snake. Thank God that the snake did not bite me. There were also other encounters with snakes elsewhere but God is truly with me regardless of where I am. I am able to experience God and the peace from Him.
Today, for those of us who are seeking for a faith, have you truly seen the God whom you want to worship? Christians call God “Abba Father!” and this shows a very intimate relationship. We wish that God could reveal Himself to us and hug us in His arms. This is the faith of a Christian. Are you able to have such a relationship with God?
We go home every day from work or school. When Christians talked about going home, we are referring to our heavenly home which we are looking forward to. We express this desire in our hymns. However, to the non-believers, this only means death and they are unwilling to speak about this topic. Christians are able to look at death so lightly because every day of our life is given by God. One day, when God yearns for us and call us home, it will be a wonderful thing. When a child goes home from school, he will be happy to see his parents at home. Similarly, we are happy to be able to see the God whom we worship.
Job 22:21 – “Now acquaint yourself with Him, and be at peace;..”
Peace is important and it surpasses everything including wealth. Christians need to learn and strive to be godly and to be contented with what we have. You can be a wealthy man but it does not mean that you can be a healthy man. Youth is indeed an exciting and dazzling period of one’s life but it is temporary and short. God has promised us peace and blessings and grace shall also be given to us. This is what we call abundance in blessings and grace.
Eph 1:7-8 -– “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence”
God has given us abundant blessings and riches. A father who loves his child will give all that his child asks for. He will also give his child the best he can and expects nothing in return.
In the western culture, when a child turns adulthood at sixteen, he is supposed to leave home. This is the legal age to work. If the parents are still providing for the child and allowing him to stay on, he should have the courtesy to ask for permissions in their house. In this way, he would learn to be thankful for what he has.
Chinese parents will not expect a return for whatever we gave to our children and God treats us in the same way. His grace is given to us continuously because we are willing to know and acknowledge Him. He has chosen us to have an intimate relationship with him. He gave us peace and since we are His children, He protects us regardless of where we are.
If we want to establish the correct faith, we need to examine our daily experiences with God. As sons of God, we can worship Him freely and experience the peace and blessings from Him. Can you also feel the same greatness in your religion?
This year I have conducted 16 funerals but since I am in Singapore now, I do not know if there are more funerals. We noticed the striking difference between a Christian and a non-Christian funeral procession. The former is usually conducted in a quiet and peaceful manner. For Christians, we believe that the deceased is going to his or her heavenly home, resting from the labour of this world. Hence, we sing hymns of peace and grace during the funeral. On the other hand, we usually hear loud musical instruments being played during the funeral procession of non-Christians. The family members of the deceased have to bow or kneel down in front of the deceased.
We are able to see God even by leading a simple life! I had been to a very remote hill area in Sabah and there was no electricity supply. They would place kerosene lamps on the pulpit and the stairways. Since there was limited lighting, I had trouble reading. However, the members there were able to sing the hymns loudly. Perhaps they had already memorized the lyrics, but I was unable to see the words. There were also many insects attracted by the light into the church but I only saw smiles from everyone and there were no cries from the children. This was indeed a very simple life yet it was filled with joy because they believed in the Lord.
Some other members, though poor, also led a very simple life. Yet they were joyful and they could see God everyday. We should constantly ask ourselves, “Have I seen God?”
Job 42:5 – “I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You.”
Job had completely understood his relationship with God. Do you want to see God and what do you expect of Him? Are you looking for an intimate relationship with Him? Or are you seeking for god in a statue?
May the teachings of the Lord fill your heart and the grace and the blessings of God are with us.
