About the bread and cup used for Holy Communion

In the material sense, both the bread or the cup of grape juice remained unchanged. After giving thanks, the Lord said, “This is my body” followed by “This is the new covenant of my blood.” The word “is” determines that the bread and cup become (or are spiritualised into) the body and blood for the Lord’s word is spirit and life. He is the Almighty God who has the power to bring about what He had said. By this, we should believe.

Why do we then say “Eat this bread and drink this cup?” rather than “Eat this body, drink this blood?”

When the Lord established the Holy Communion, He regarded the bread as His body and the cup His blood. (Jn 6:55) Only through the bread and the cup can we eat the Lord’s flesh and drink His blood. Otherwise, how can He give us His flesh and blood? (Jn 6:52)

Materially, we eat bread and drink of the cup but spiritually we are eating His flesh and drinking His blood. The Lord has the power to transform the bread and cup into His flesh and blood.

The bread and cup become the body and blood according to the bible.
