Question: Who is Jesus and why was He born as a man to be sent to the world?

Who is Jesus ?

Jesus is God, the Word of life from the beginning. The Word was with God and the Word was God (Jn 1:1). The Word became flesh and was born as man who was called “Son of Man” (Mt 16:13). He is also God’s beloved Son (Mt 3:17). He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created; all things were created by Him and for Him (Col 1:15-17). So Jesus was the Saviour born for mankind (Lk 2:11-12).

The word “Jesus” is Greek; in Hebrew it is “Joshua,” which means “the Lord is the Saviour.” So this name is God’s name (Isa 9:6), and by no other name can we be saved (Acts 4:12). “Christ” is also Greek which is “Messiah” in Hebrew, which means “the anointed one.” For ancient Hebrew kings, prophets and priests, they had to be anointed. Christ is God’s anointed one, King of kings and Lord of lords (Rev 19:16; Jn 18:37).

How was Jesus born?

By the Holy Spirit through virgin Mary (Mt 1:18, 25; Lk 1:34-35; 4:4). It had been prophesied by Isaiah 700 years before Christ’s birth. The prophet, inspired by the Holy Spirit said, “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel,” which means “God with us” (Isa 7:14, 9:6).

If God is Jesus, why was He born as man?

God wanted to reveal Himself in flesh and therefore dwelt in flesh among us. “No one has ever seen God, but God the one and only, who is at the Father’s side, has made Him known” (Jn 1:18). Christ came to the world to save sinners and reveal God’s love (1 Tim 1:5; 1 Jn 4:9-10) that men may be saved by believing in Him (Acts 16:30-31).

God loves the world and wants to save the world, but why must He send Jesus to the world?

Men are separated from God because of sin. Therefore, Jesus must come as a mediator (1 Tim 2:5; 1 Jn 2:1) so that man may be reconciled to God (Rom 5:10) and lead us to God (1 Pet 3:18) so that we may be God’s children (Mal 3:18).

If God is Jesus, what do Jesus and the true God have in common?

He is with God (Jn 1:1; 14:9-10), equal with God (Jn 5:18, 10:30), shares God’s authority (Jn 5:27; Matt 28:18), God’s glory (Jn 17:5), honour (Jn 5:23), work (Jn 5:17, 19) and righteousness (1 Pet 1:1; Tit 2:13). He lives with God (Rev 1:17-18; Jn 6:57) and shares God’s holiness (Lk 1:35; Rev 15:4; 1 Pet 3:15).

“There is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Believe and trust in the Lord Jesus as your Lord and Savior. He will save you; and He will give you joy and peace in this life.
