I’m Not Sinful, Why Do I Need Forgiveness Of Sins?
Are all the people in the world sinners? Is there anyone sinless?
Since sin came into the world, it became an irresistible attack from which no one can escape.
So the world’s people are called sinners, a name that matches their nature, according to God’s judgment (Rom 4:5).
God watches from heaven and finds no righteous man on earth (Eccl 7:20; Ps 130:3; Rom 3:10-11).
Some people boast of their behaviour and call themselves “good men” or “virtuous men.”
In fact, all their righteous acts are like filthy rags (Isa 64:6). They are all deviations from the right way
(Rom 3:12). By God’s standard, none is sinless (1 Jn 1:8) and all need His forgiveness of sins.
Why are there such terrible deaths for mankind?
The bible says, “The wages of sin is death.” (Rom 6:23).
Men should obey the holy God and enjoy life. Yet they rebelled and listened to Satan,
who had been sinning from the beginning.
Therefore man degenerated, became a slave to sin and received the wages of sin.
1. The cause of death
Through the disobedience of one man many were made sinners.” (Rom 5:19)
2. The extension of death
“Death came to all men.” (Rom 5:12)
3. The power of death
“Death reigned through the sin of one man.” (Rom 5:14)
4. The expansion of death
“In Adam all die.” (1 Cor 15:22)
5. The destiny of death
“Man is destined to die once.” (Heb 9:27)
6. The destination of death
“Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.” (Rev 20:14)
For the forgiveness of sins, what should sinners realise about themselves?
They should realise that they are sinners (Lk 5:8) and enemies of God (Col 1:21; Rom 5:10, 8:7),
living in their old selves (Eph 4:22), separated from God’s life and are dead (Lk 9:60; Eph 2:5).
Only with such conscience, would they realise how much they need God’s mercy and salvation and His forgiveness of sins.
Why do sinners need salvation?
1. Sinners need to be forgiven
“…from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins….” (Acts 26:18)
2. Enemies need to be reconciled
“Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Rom 5:1)
3. Old selves need to be renewed
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Cor 5:17)
4. The dead needs life
“…by believing you may have life in his name.” (Jn 20:31)
Can men grant themselves the forgiveness of sins and save themselves?
No. For they have been sold as slaves to sin (Rom 7:14).
The whole world is under the reign of the evil one.
“No man can redeem the life of another” (Ps 49:7).
Fortunately, God is merciful to the people of the world and does not want to see anyone perish. “He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire. He set my feet on a rock.” (Ps 40:2).
Therefore, salvation and forgiveness of sins do not come from us but from God.
The basic meaning of salvation is:
1. Saved from sins (Mt 1:21)
2. Rescued from the coming wrath (1 Thess 1:10)
3. Brought into the heavenly kingdom (2 Tim 4:18)
When men have the forgiveness of sins from God, they are saved from condemnation and are granted eternal life.
